This was a seridipitous commission. I had just completed a 3-D portrait of David Bowie in his early 50's when a patron saw the piece and had to have something of Bowie, unique of their own. The only brief was the size and that it had to be from Bowie's "Thin White Duke" era (the persona he created while recording and touring for the album Station to Station). I was, at the time of the commission, in my early 50's and preparing my work a wider audience. There were many questions ratlling around in my head during that period: "How did Bowie do it? How did he put forth work from a place of vulnerability while protecting his identity?" "How did he change personas and thus shift culture?" "How does one be authentically themselves to a largely anonymous audience?" These questions and more were present while I was painting The Masquerade.
