The Masquerade is a painting of David Bowie's Thin White Duke. Why do we choose people to entertain us? Why do we choose those we do? Is it as simple as they are entertaining? Or rather, that they reflect something we need to and or want to see?
The Thin White Duke was David Bowie's last performance persona. Bowie only embodied The Thin White Duke in 1976 & 1977 while he was recording and touring for his album Station to Station.
David Bowie said of the Thin White Duke that he was "A mad aristocrat. A hollow man who sang songs of romance with agonized intensity while feeling nothing. The Duke was dry ice masquerading as fire."
Maybe what speaks loudest is that The Thin White Duke was the final persona adopted by David Bowie. Somehow, the character’s reflection still feels relevant.
